Remove that context, though, and it’s an extremely safe soft-rock album with decent pop instincts that’d get maybe a 5.3 from yours truly. Before Rumours, before Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, before the drama took hold, Fleetwood Mac was making a name for itself as a hard-rocking psychedelic blues band. The process through which Fleedwood Mac make albums involves blood and emotional torture, and that they were able to put out a complete product, much less one that seemed so unique when it came out in 1977, is an achievement by itself. Mind that this is just a small summation of the album’s legacy who knows how many essays have been written singing its merits over the years? I’d never actually listened to Rumours before this past week, but I had always meant to get around to listening to it, so I figured this was as good a time as any to check out what so many people have claimed is a necessary listen, and it proceeded to bore me to sleep multiple times. Vibe, Q, Slant, USA Today, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and so many others have either given it near-perfect scores, placed it high on lists dedicated to counting down the best albums of the 70’s, or otherwise claimed Rumours is a strong candidate for the best album ever made. It won the Grammy for Album of the Year, for starters, and that was the start of its praise. Rumours is one of the most beloved albums of all time, and simply listing the common praises and accolades it have achieved could fill its own column. The standard deviation for this album is 17.2.This week, we look at one of the most beloved albums of all time.
